This week, I’m keeping it going on the “game music” front, with another game from Altus. This time, we get the opening theme of ‘Catherine’.
I personally love everything that Atlus have thrown at us. From ‘Shin Megami Tensei’ to ‘Arcana Hearts’, I love it all. And then there’s ‘Catherine’. Jesus, there’s ‘Catherine’.
This is easily one of my five favourite games of all time. This is taking into account that I’m a big Pokémon nerd, I love Yu-Gi-Oh! to death, and I grew up on 2-D fighting games. ‘Catherine’ blows them all out the water. Easily the best JRPG I’ve ever played, it has survival horror and puzzle elements that make it a highly addictive and atmospheric game. There’s also the fact I have all achievements on it, which should show you how much I love it.
Plus, since this is Atlus we’re talking about, the music is brilliant. The music for ‘Catherine’ is made up of remixed classic pieces and original work by Shouji Meguro, amongst others, which are kind of a mix of jazz and synth. With booming basslines in parts, it makes a very tense atmosphere for boss fights, and the music for the RPG elements is relaxing and soothing.
Anyway, this song is the opening theme for ‘Catherine’. Sung by L-VOKAL, it’s a Japanese rap song. More people should like Japanese rap, so this is why it’s here.
…And since that was a pretty short song, I’ll leave my favourite track from the OST on here, Also Sprach Brooks. It’s a play on Also Sprach Zarathustra. Funny.
So, enjoy until next week, when undoubtedly Lucretia’s doing a SOTW.
