Episode 1: The Contract Hidden in the Maze

Good Mornin to you too

The episode begins in a maze with two people walking down a corridor. They reach a dead end but the older man; Genius Okudera discovers a hidden door and walks through. He gloats that he is the Puzzle King and that there is no puzzle he can solve. However, the roof comes down which makes Daimon Kaito drag him out. They escape just as the maze is flooded. Daimon comments that this is no puzzle as it endangers lives. The next day, Itou Nonoha complains that Kaito left early as she made him breakfast. She arrives at school to find a crowd has gathered. Kaito has removed all the desks from the school and has setup the Labyrinth using the desks similar to the real one and finds that it has no solution. Nonoha fly-kicks him and orders him to return the desks. The Genius Okudera declares on T.V. that the puzzle was dangerous and that he saved Kaito himself. The headmaster decides to suspend Kaito for just 10 minutes.

Got somethin in your eye

Later, Kaito heads to the Puzzle club room to meet the club president Jikukawa Souji, but he is not there, so Kaito waits. As Kaito sits, club member Takeda Naoki presents him with a Sudoku puzzle which took him the entire day to complete, However Kaito completes in a matter of seconds. Just then, the president turns up who asks Kaito to join the club. Kaito refuses and asks about the electronic device he gave him. That night Kaito completes several puzzles and gets an invitation from someone called Minotaur. He confronts Souji again about the device as Souji offers to throw away the device. Kaito gets another message from Minotaur inviting him to solve the sage puzzle and if he fails he would die. Kaito closes the device and declares that there is no puzzle he can’t solve and pulls a face at Souji.

It is not that amazin really

The headmaster Kaidou Baron talks with Souji that Kaito could be a user of Phi Brain and could unlock the divine puzzle. Therefore Kaidou Baron has no choice but to believe in Kaito. Kaito with Nonoha arrive at the cave entrance to the puzzle. They head down and they are greeted by Minotaur. He tells them to solve the puzzle and they will be rewarded with the treasure. Kaito replies that he isn’t interested in the treasure. However, Minotaur disagrees. Kaito solves the door puzzle and they enter the labyrinth. Kaito wants to check a particular area of the maze. Nonoha runs off believing that following the wall would lead to the exit. She gets a head of Kaito and falls into a trap. Luckily, Kaito jumps and grabs her hand before she falls. He tells her that there are traps everywhere except the correct path, walking away from the trap she apologizes.

Pretty picture

Kaito is lost after Nonoha’s escapade, but she manages to lead him to the point that he is interested in. It is a dead end, but Nonoha discovers that the corners of the wall are different. Kaito asks if she had seen an axe somewhere, she points to a column and Kaito pushes it. It turns out to be a switch and it moves part of the maze, making it solvable. They reach the exit and open the door. They find a flight of stairs with a hut at the top. Kaito goes up alone and finds a Mandala. He touches it and is consumed by a bright light, which creates and attaches an armband to his left arm. Suddenly the door closes sealing them in. A voice tells them that the Orpheus’s contract has been fulfilled and that Kaito must use the full extent of his brain to solve the puzzle.

Try knockin

The puzzle is revealed and shows hundreds of wooden cogs all connected. Kaito is given the choice of pulling one of the three ropes. The right one would stop the water flow which is running to the support beams, but won’t hold the amount of water that is constantly filling up. However, the wrong ones would cause the support to collapse on top of them. Nonoha starts kicking at the door trying to get out. Kaito struggles to figure which rope to pull. He realises that he cannot solve it as a support beam falls with water which splashes near Nonoha making her scream. Kaito screams and is overcome with power. He closes his eyes as the armband starts to glow. He reopens his eyes, now with his right eye glowing red; he casually announces that he has solved it.

This is episode was just like I thought; a puzzle anime. It is quite distance to what Professor Layton is, especially the life in peril parts, although Genius Okudera does look a bit like Don Pablo. Kaito does seem to be the “I don’t care” kind of guy, even removing all the desks from school just to prove that the maze was unsolvable. The headmaster and the Puzzle club president must have a hidden agenda with Kaito about finding the divine puzzle. We’ll probably get more information as the anime progresses. Ok, this blog is very very much late, but Lucretia needed to catch up. So now I am behind, which means fast typing as I do aim to get the three animes out on time, even it means double blogging, which Lucretia doesn’t like, but everything would just get delayed and delayed, which will result in backlogs which I also still aim to complete. This anime I discovered is 25 episodes long, with Last exile at 24, so I am going to be very busy this season.
