Episode 1: August 31st (The Last Day)

A bit of light reading

Touma is at his apartment struggling to do his homework. From the pass few days (recap from last season’s episode 18) Touma was used to pretend to be boyfriend of Misaka Mikoto; who was stalked by another boy who turn out to be another assassin who assumed the identity of Mitsuki Unabara so that he could kill Touma, because some people feared his power and various associates. So in the end he hadn’t completed his homework because of this distraction. On top of that, Index is watching TV disturbing him, who then demands some snacks. Meanwhile, outside this mysterious guy is looking for the Index of Forbidden Books; which resides in Index’s mind. He locates Touma’s apartment and using his magic ability; a magical crossbow called an azusayumi, enters the apartment, however Touma or Index aren’t there. Instead Touma, Index and Sphinx had gone to the local restaurant, so Touma can carry on his work while Index has some food.

This is a plant pot!

When the waitress comes back with the food, she slips and the food and drinks end up on Touma and ruin his homework. This entire commotion alerts the mysterious guy; who happens to be passing by and spots Index through the window. The mysterious guy attacks Touma, but Touma neutralises the attack by using his “Imagine Breaker” ability. The guy begins to explain his intentions, but is stopped by Touma who now is angry because the guy had turned his homework in confetti. The guy kidnaps Index and turns himself invisible and flees knocking over Aisa Himegami.

No more catnip for you!!!

Touma runs through Academy City trying to ring Index; who he supplied her with a mobile phone. However she doesn’t answer, so he hang ups. Suddenly Sphinx leaps off his shoulder and runs off towards a hotel. Touma follows Sphinx thinking that it can lead to Index but instead ends up, scavenging inside garbage bins. Touma grabs the useless moggie and continues his search. Meanwhile, up above on the roof of the hotel, the magician explains to Index that wants to acquire a volume from the forbidden books in Index’s mind, but before that needs to setup a protective magic boundary.

Mikoto or a Rhubarb?

Touma continues his search and almost bumps into Mikoto Misaka (YAY!! my favourite “Railgun”). He tries to run off in his search, but is stopped by Mikoto, who is annoyed by his behaviour, but turns bright red when confronted by Touma (Look at what Sphinx is doing here…). As she starts to explain, Touma runs off which annoys her again. Meanwhile upon the roof, Index activates her phone and Touma is able to listen in on the conversation between Index and the guy (Right I am calling him Yamisaka from now) who then activates the magical barrier. Touma spots the barrier coming from the roof of the hotel and rushes off towards it.

Not the alarm call he was expecting at this hotel

Upon the roof, Yamisaka starts using his ability to access the grimoires. However this proves to be overwhelming and he starts coughing up blood and experiences a lot of pain, but continues nevertheless. The reason behind this is that Yamisaka wants to save this woman; who he has grown fond of; maybe in love with her. However, she stricken with a curse that means that she would eventually die and the only way to save her was for him to access a grimoire that would cure the woman of her curse. Suddenly, Touma accesses the roof and disables the magical barrier. He and Yamisaka fight; with Yamisaka launching magic attacks and Touma blocking them with his Imagine Breaker. However, Yamisaka collapses due to his weaken state trying to access the grimoires. Thinking that he has died peacefully, Touma wakes him up; using Sphinx’s claws on his face. He tells him that he do whatever he can to help Yamisaka’s woman friend and break her curse using his Imagine Breaker.

This is the sea, you see

ED Credits go up. At the end, Kanzaki Kaori is on a beach of boulders at night. She is attacked by several darken suits of Armour. She despatches them with ease, who turn out to be the “Knights of England”. This was stated by Tsuchimikado; the double spy, who happens to be watching Kanazaki fight. He tells her he would clear up the mess and report to his superiors; whoever that is. Kanazaki continues on her way.

Not a bad opening episode, it just picked up from where it left off from last season. Straight into a new story, this time the target is Index but it is resolved quickly in this episode, but it looks as though it will continue into the next. The new OP and ED Themes are catchy too, but would take some time for me to get use to them. Just hope this new series goes with its best foot forward, however I won’t be able to see episodes 2 & 3 until I get back from a holiday, so it would be a while before I would continue here.
