Episode 3: You Were Really Cool
Synopsis:
Can’t you just shake hands?
Naoto meets his friend from school Mari Sasshou, who has OJT a month after him, in catering. Turns out she is working at the fancy restaurant Cherry Blossom. Later Mari and Naoto reminisce about Naoto’s odd behaviour at school.
Calm Down
The next day, it is business as usual at K4, when Naoto finds Mari had tried to contact him. It is revealed that Mari’s friend Kaori has disappeared and that Mari is worried about her. Naoto and the team search records of incidents on the railway to no avail.
A bit tied up
Kaori’s phone turns up in lost property, with a recent audio recording of Kaori being kidnapped. Mari listens to the audio clip and determines Kaori’s last known location. They begin searching the immediate area and find Kaori tied up in a warehouse.
Close encounters
They are then attacked by a group of men, but Aoi, Naoto and Shou subdue them. Turns out the men were black market traders and Kaori witnessed one of the deals and so took her. Later, Mari tells Naoto that he has changed and was pretty cool.
I am watching you
Analysis:
A new character is brought in, Mari but looks as though she would be the supporting character when the group decides to have lunch at the Cherry Blossom restaurant. Naoto hasn’t done anything dumb this episode. It seems we have a character who leaps before he looks. Such as the situation of the bomb, with him wanting to warn people, but would have resulted in wide spread panic and the possibility of injuries. News could of leaked and the bomber could have detonated the bomb early.
I suppose I could give him a little leeway as it wasn’t his first choice of job he wanted. Then again anyone with a bit of common sense and a little wiser would have tweaked the idea.
I am still what confused by who is in charge of K4. Sources say that Nana steps down as leader and puts Naoto in charge or Naoto is like a vice captain. So I am little confused by this but after watching this episode I kind of leading towards that Naoto is in charge.
I have a gut feeling that at some point, we would have a runaway train episode in which the team has to stop it, with Naoto; centre stage. I am usually right in some way, but sometimes it is revealed to be something along the right lines; a runaway train and that is it. However I don’t get what I usually want.

Unfortunately I was really disappointed by this show. Like you, I thought it was a good set-up for runaway trains and the like — and there is some of that, but episode after episode they played up the cheesy fan service and the harem hijinx.
Really a shame, because I thought this premise had some potential. I think your point about who is in charge of K4 is an excellent one in this regard. It really doesn’t take much to keep an audience, who accepts that the genre is light entertainment, to keep from wondering how this is all supposed to work. Library Wars didn’t literally make sense, but I never thought, the premise was full of holes. I enjoyed the ride. There was action and romance and idealism about libraries. It worked. The execution here is just not where it needs to be.
